One of the many promises God gave to His people was that a king would sit on David's throne forever; implying that this king would reign eternally. However as time went on and God's people rebelled, one wondered where this king was. God's people lived in a foreign land with a language they did not understand. Where was this king god had promised? Had God's people got the wrong message? Had the king come and they had missed him? Many centuries had gone by. There was still no word of a king. And then whispers of a king began to circulate. A young woman was pregnant in unusual circumstances. The baby had some interesting words said of Him. He would sit on David's throne and rule over the house of Jacob forever. The child was destined to cause the rising and falling of many in Israel.
However, it would be easy to say that of a child. Many have high hopes of their children. They will achieve many great things. The test for it comes when you look back to see what the child has achieved.
Isaiah, speaking several centuries before the child would be born spoke of what this king would do sitting on David's throne. "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor." For Isaiah, when you see this king doing these things, you will know that the king has come. What a great King to place our trust in?
