Jesus had many encounters with people that came across His path during His 30 plus years here on planet Earth. Some of those encounters involved people who needed physical healing. Some were under demonic attack. Still others sought Jesus out for wisdom for living.

The latter is what we encounter this morning. Jesus encounters a young man who was extremely wealthy. He comes to Jesus with a very important question on his heart. “What must I do to get eternal life?” It is the sought of question we are to be prepared to answer.

Whether he was serious in his responses we are not told. He had kept the commandments which many would have failed at this point. However, Jesus tells him to and sell all he had and give to the poor, then come follow me.

With those words of Jesus ringing ih his ears he goes away very sad for we are told he is wealthy, extremely wealthy. His heart was not set fully on Jesus just yet. What is the commandment he had not kept? “Love the Lord your God with ALL your heart.”

The young man’s heart was divided between his wealth and his love for God. Jesus warned you cannot serve two masters. We are not told whether the young man followed Jesus. Who have you told you are following Jesus?
